You’ve finished your manuscript … Congratulations!
You’ve typed The End. You’ve gone through your story with a fine-toothed comb. You’ve been given feedback and you’ve incorporated it. You’ve typed The End again. Your manuscript file is now entitled Manuscript-FINALfinal-REALLY-v4.
What’s next?
As an author, I understand how precious your story is. I know that you’ve spent months - years - dreaming about your characters, your plot, and fixating on those scenes that you just can’t wait to write. I know - first-hand - how vulnerable it can be opening yourself up to critique.
I also realise that no matter how thorough I think I’ve been during my self-editing process, those pesky typos can still sneak through, and it’s important to have another pair of eyes to catch the things you can’t.
Editorial services
I offer three kinds of editorial services.
Copyediting
Copyediting catches issues with spelling, punctuation, and grammar. It checks for consistency in word choice, tense, and style, and ensures clarity of meaning. It identifies repetition and removes unnecessary spacing within sentences.
Copyediting is done at the line level. A copyedit does not provide feedback on strengthening prose, storyline, characterisation, or flow. It is focused on the technical.
Copyediting is suitable for authors whose manuscripts have been through multiple revisions. You should be confident regarding your story’s plot, structure, characters, and its overall readability.
A copyedited manuscript will be returned with markups at the line level. Comments may be used where appropriate.
Cost: 0.02 AUD per word
Line editing
Line editing includes everything encompassed under copyediting, along with suggestions for improvements in word choice, flow, and readability on the line and paragraph level. It focuses both on the technical and the reader experience, and includes comments to help strengthen your prose.
Line editing is suitable for authors whose manuscripts have been through multiple revisions. You should be confident regarding your story’s plot, structure, and characters, but you may need assistance in strengthening your prose and readability at the line and paragraph level.
A line edited manuscript will be returned with markups at the line level, along with comments aimed at strengthening prose at a line and paragraph level.
Cost: 0.03-0.04+ AUD per word*
The Hollie special (copyediting + line editing + beta reading)
The Hollie special includes both copyediting and line editing, along with a beta read that will offer critique on your story as a whole. This encompasses feedback on your plot, characters, and setting, along with comments on your use of dialogue, your pacing, and your writing style. This service focuses on the technical, the reader experience, and on strengthening your story as a whole.
The Hollie special is suitable for authors whose manuscript has been through revisions, and who are confident that there are no major changes required to the plot or structure of the story. You may need some assistance in strengthening your prose and readability, and require feedback on your story from a reader’s point of view. Please note that this is not a developmental edit. Though I may suggest amendments to your story (including the addition or removal of scenes), I will work from what exists, assuming that you have already made any complex structural edits, and that the story is largely in its final form.
Your manuscript will be returned with markups at the line level, and with comments encompassing line, paragraph, and other suggestions in situ. In addition, you will be provided with a feedback summary which will indicate areas of strength, areas of improvement, and any other suggestions I can give to make your manuscript shine.
Cost: 0.05-0.06+ AUD per word*
*Why do these servies have a range of prices?
Your quote will be based on both the volume and complexity of the feedback required. Manuscripts needing less work will be quoted the lower amount; manuscripts requiring more in-depth feedback will fall under the higher range.
Note: I do offer proofreading for existing clients. If you would like to include an additional proofreading service, please note this in your enquiry.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
How does it work?
If you have a manuscript ready to go, you’ve thought about which type of editing you need, and you’d like to work with me, please contact me, including:
Your name
The genre and word count of your manuscript
Which editorial service you would like, and
Which month you would like to book (availability below)
I will return your email, and ask you for two sections of your manuscript - the scene you feel is strongest, and a scene that you feel needs editorial input (no more than 1000 words each).
I will return these sections to you marked up with my edits, along with a quote for the full manuscript. If you’re happy to procede, we’ll talk timelines!
Why choose me?
It’s a good question, and one you should consider seriously!
Firstly, always choose the people you work with carefully. If you’re reading through this website thinking ‘I don’t think we’d vibe’, or ‘I don’t like her writing style’, then I am not the editor for you.
If, on the other hand, you’re still here, let me lay out my qualifications.
Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Literature and Ancient History
Graduate Diploma in Education in Secondary Teaching
Recovering high school teacher (I still love my red pen!)
Current tertiary senior administrator
Author of nine novels under two pen names, including one awarded a Kirkus Star and featured in Kirkus Magazine
Lifelong reader
In my day job, I’m used to working with high-level policy and procedural documents, and have been responsible for drafting a range of public documentation and sending institution-wide communications. However, my happy place is with stories, whether creating my own, or making other people’s shine.
Which genres do you work with?
I am only accepting fiction at this time.
I am an excellent fit for romance, including contemporary, historical, paranormal, monster, omegaverse, fantasy, and sci-fi. I am also an excellent fit for fantasy, including romantasy, epic fantasy, and historical fantasy, and for dystopia. I am comfortable with any heat level, from zero chilli peppers all the way to the spice-is-the-plot (if your work has content warnings, please include these in your enquiry letter).
I am a bisexual author who writes bisexual characters; I’d love the chance to champion your queer stories!
I am a good fit for literary fiction, soft sci-fi, and erotica.
I am unfortunately not a good fit for thrillers, crime*, hard sci-fi, or middle-grade or children’s lit. (*I will accept cosy crime fiction romance.)
